Japanese Painting Course
This course aims to broaden students' horizon from classic to
modern, and from the West to the East, Japan.
The
Japanese painting has changed in long time as it takes
in foreign fine arts. Especially, the Japanese painting
was deeply influenced by Western modern fine arts and
changed rapidly. However, on the other side, an original
attraction such as the beauty of a line or margin and
symbolic expression has been lost recently. This course
aims to broaden and deepen students' horizon from classic
to modern, and from the West to the East, Japanwhile
looking back upon the history of Japanese painting once
again and going back to the starting point in order
to develop the radical possibility that Japanese paintings
has naturally, aim modern Japanese paintings which can
be accepted internationally and pursue creative self-expression
which is not limited by the stereotype. |

This course aims
to broaden the possibility of expression by experiencing various
techniques and materials.
In the freshman year, basic education such as treatment of
materials and description is thoroughly performed. In the
sophomore year, students experience other fieldworks. On the
junior year, students are divided into three classes and learn
sketching and classic technique research, etc. in seminar-like
system. Moreover, all classes help to broaden students' knowledge
about techniques and materials and enhance the contents of
pictures.

Oil Painting Course
To draw a picture
considering the meaning of life
In this course, students verify the 20th century's expression
of pictures and study the scheme of pictures while connecting
it to the social background and phenomenon of the time when
the work was produced. In drawing oil painting pictures, it
is encouraged to do so while being strongly aware of a relationship
with the modern society, and considering the meaning of life
besides delving into internal stock. In fine arts research,

The new technique
of expression is explored on the basis of the molding
consciousness born by body feeling.
In order to explore the new techniques of expression,
new materials and media techniquesare taken in on the
basis of the molding consciousness born by body feelings
such as seeing, hearing and touching. Furthermore, views
such as law of perspective or chiaroscuro after Western
Renaissance aren't thought as absolute truth and each
plane expression is pursued while touching expression
form such as the meaning of the line, margin and space
and contra-perspective and movement of viewpoint the
East and Japan have cultivated. From the third year,
after drawing intensive training course, students are
divided into three classes for every theme and produce
works. |

Sculpture Course
This course opens
the power to feel, five senses, and builds up molding power.
3-dimensional
molding cannot be impressive artistic expression by
just making solid things. It is essential to include
our own world on solid things and to stir up imagination
of watchers. In this course, basis for molding is studied
in the first year and lessons that heighten sensitivity,
invoke experience and memory, and connect them to creation
are performed. For example, students go to mountain
stream to search motifs such as driftwood, or go out
to a town with a recorder to gather various sounds.
Like this, an image is evoked by experiences and the
form is considered. Through lessons using five senses,
students open themselves and develop "the power
to feel". |
 |
From
the third year, Students chose one seminar and explore their
theme.
In the junior or senior year, students can chose one seminar
teacher freely, develop individuality and quality, and explore
their theme by taking communication with him/her and touching
quality as a writer. On the other hand, a clear frame is given
to work desire increasing for four years, and a research note
is made as training that develops the thinking power to molding.
Moreover, the curriculum where students can experience exhibitions
and workshops outside the universityis performed. For example,
students participate in the lesson of a glass studio at the
town artist residence of Kanazu-cho, Fukui. Through the work
production program produced in local activation or an industry-government-academia
joint project, students work graduation productions, while
growing up socially.

Ceramics Course
In
this course, students concentrate on manufacturing "works"
which heighten and develop human life.
To make vessels and ornaments by kneading and burning clay
has been one of the irreplaceableand valuable deeds from immemorial
time. It is the collaboration between the "human"
and "clay" given from nature, and human attitude
toward ceramic art is unchangeable in all times. For our life,
ceramics is required most and makes human life brilliant.
This course nurtures students who can manufacture the "work"that
truly heighten and develop human life, not just the ceramic
arts with the empty "beauty" away from human life
nor the formalistic and conceptual "vessels" and
"works".
This
course adopts the studio system, the style where techniques
and knowledge are handed down.
Predecessors' techniques and knowledge have been handed down
from a long time ago. This course adopts the studio system
so that various techniques, thoughts, and attitudes toward
works handed down, learned and accumulated, can be passed
on effectively in this traditional town, Kyoto. In the freshman
year students can chose "vessel studio" or "clay-work
studio" by every person's concern and awareness of issues
and pursue each expression there. However, students can also
changetheir studio in the junior year. Moreover, the studio
is irrespective of age. All years'students work in the same
studio so that they can learn various techniques and ways
of thought and attitudes toward works.

Textile Course
Regarding
experience as important, students do the dyeing of textile
from the freshman year.
Textile is the most familiar material for human life. In this
course, various long-established expressions are studied,
andthe beauty of the dyeing and weaving with materials, techniques
and designs is pursued. This course's specialty is that experience
is regarded as important. So, this course offers the basic
educational curriculum where students can actually dye and
weave in a studio from the freshman year. In the sophomore
year, this course offers the chance of learning in another
course and workshops such as dyeing with a frame, a wooden
frame machine and a basket, in order to expand the width of
self-expression. After the junior year, each student tries
a free work with his/her own theme or new concept's "textile"
by collaboration between industry and academic. By doing this,
students seek textile work suited to modern age.
Using
a geographical advantage of Kyoto, students can learn worldwide
textile.
Kyoto has been called the capital of textile for many years
and is full of textile culture without parallel in the world.
Taking the advantage of this special environment, students
study worldwide textile from many aspects on a campus of Kyoto.
For example, many artists and researchers of textile visit
Kyoto from overseas every year. By using these chances, this
course offers the special lectureswhere students can know
the foreign situation of textile. Moreover, this course also
gives chances of visiting studios of artists and touring the
traditional industry or production area of textile. In Kyoto,
the exhibitions of high quality textile are held all the year
round in some art galleries and art museums. In such Kyoto,
students can extend the view of textile and study while gaining
new inspiration.
